Why June Festival?
We revived the June Festival in 2005 after a 40-year
interruption.
The June Festival began when culture was segregated, even in
Cincinnati.
From 1939 to the mid-'50's the June Festival provided a stage
and audience for African American musicians .
Because it has been over 50 years since the last June Festival,
younger generations were unaware of it until 2005, when Janelle
Gelfand wrote a feature piece in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Songs
Amid Segregation
The connection struck the Juneteenth organizers as obvious
and compelling.! And the 2005 & 2006 concerts exceeded all expectations!
Juneteenth Cincinnati thanks the Cincinnati May Festival for its repeated, generous support,
helping to assure the success of this year's June Festival.
